Florida Attorney General Asks Supreme Court For More Time

A Golden Investment Opportunity or a Legal Hurdle? Florida’s Attorney General, Ashley Moody, has recently requested an extension from the state Supreme Court. The Attorney General looks to file briefs in a case that could determine the fate of a marijuana legalization initiative on the 2024 ballot. 

The Attorney General’s office, along with other groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Drug Free America Foundation, are seeking to invalidate the cannabis measure. They are citing numerous other responsibilities during the relevant period.

Economic Implications 

Despite the ongoing legal battle, the economic potential of cannabis legalization cannot be ignored. The marijuana company Trulieve has already contributed more than $39 million to the Smart & Safe Florida campaign. 

If Approved

If the measure is approved, it would allow existing medical cannabis companies like Trulieve to begin selling marijuana to all adults over 21. State officials estimate that the marijuana legalization initiative could generate quite a bit of cash. A new revenue source between $195.6 million and $431.3 million in new sales tax revenue annually. These figures could increase significantly if lawmakers decided to impose an additional excise tax on cannabis transactions.

Public Opinion on Legalization

Public opinion seems to be all for legalizing marijuana. A poll published in March shows that 70% of Florida voters support the move. Florida voters had previously approved a medical cannabis constitutional amendment in 2016. However, the initiative would need at least 60% of Florida voters’ approval to be enacted.
